The Battle.
The Battle of Antietam also known as The Battle of Sharpsburg, took place at Antietam Creek near the village of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The time of this battle was September 17, 1862 during the Civil War. There were 87,000 men that the Union had to fight with and there were 45,000 men that the Confederate had to fight with. The Union won this battle.
The Union Leader.
George B. McClellan – he also helped take part in the Army of the Potomac, but he wasn’t the leader in that battle . He lead the Union to a great victory in the Battle of Antietam. Entering this battle they had 87,000 men, but lost 12,401. 2,108 was killed, 9,540 were wounded, and 753 were either captured or missing. When general George lead them that victory they werent happy. They were critizied of this battle. Other Union people told them that they didnt have a more secure defeat on the Confederates.
The Confederate Leader.
Robert E. Lee was the leader of the Confederate against the fight againt the Union in the Battle of Antietam. The Confederate lost 10,316 soilders. 1,546 soilders were killed. 7,752 soilders were wounded and 1,018 soilders were captured/missing. Pleased to say, they lost to the Union. When the confederates lost, they lost something dear to them that made them hate the Union even more. The Confederates lost the chances to secure the International Recognition.

The Battle of Antietam had a major importance to the Civil War. This battle was known as the bloodiest single day in war. This battle was important because President Lincoln noticed the significance of this battle and this helped him issue the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.

The Battle of Antietam was started when The confederate commander planned to invade the North to give up supplies and to gather Southerns to Maryland.
The plans of Robert E. Lee's attack were destroyed when George B. McClellan discovered a piece of paper wrapped in 3 cigars dropped by a careless Confederate office. The paper read Lee’s plans and locations.The union general that found the paper was George B. McClellan, but his slowness to start the battle allowed Lee to prepare for the coming fight.
When the confederates lost they headed towards the Potomac River to take control of that area, but then George B. McClellan heard of there plans and started towards the Potomac River as well to finish the fight, but his leadership was then given up and the new Union General was Ambrose Burnside.
